Choosing the right location is one of the most important decisions for your family photography session in Bend, Oregon. Soda Creek -

Soda Creek offers a peaceful mountain creek setting surrounded by lush meadows, towering pines, and spectacular Cascade Mountain views. It’s one of my favorite locations for families, maternity sessions, couples, and anyone wanting a classic Central Oregon landscape featuring water, open space, and mountain scenery.

This location is especially wonderful for families with young children and for those wishing to include their dogs in their session. The terrain is relatively easy to navigate, there is plenty of room for kids to explore, and the combination of creek, meadow, and mountains creates a beautiful variety of backdrops all within a short walking distance.

For the best lighting and mountain views, I schedule sessions at Soda Creek in the evening, just before sunset. The soft evening light illuminates the landscape beautifully and creates the warm, dreamy look seen throughout my portfolio.

Parking is generally easy and convenient, and unlike some recreation areas, no permit is required to access this location. Soda Creek is very popular among photographers and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly during peak summer months, but the area is large enough that everyone can usually find their own quiet corner while still enjoying the incredible scenery.

One thing you will absolutely want to bring is mosquito repellent. The combination of water, meadows, and warm summer evenings makes mosquitoes a regular part of the Soda Creek experience. Thankfully, the mountain views, flowing creek, and stunning sunsets more than make up for it.

If you’re looking for a location that combines mountains, water, open meadows, easy access, and a relaxed atmosphere, Soda Creek is hard to beat.

Sparks Lake -

Sparks Lake is one of the most breathtaking locations in Central Oregon, offering reflective alpine waters and panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains. On a calm evening, the lake can mirror the mountains and sky, creating truly stunning images. This location is ideal for families, maternity sessions, couples, and anyone wanting that iconic mountain-lake backdrop.

Because of the surrounding mountain terrain and the direction of the light, Sparks Lake is best photographed in the evening. The soft, golden light and mountain views make for an unforgettable setting and consistently provide the most beautiful conditions for photography.

One important thing to note is that once you turn off Cascade Lakes Highway and begin the drive toward Sparks Lake, the road becomes a rough forest service road. In recent years, it has not been maintained particularly well, and there can be large potholes, dips, washboards, and uneven surfaces. At this time, I strongly recommend driving an SUV, truck, or vehicle with higher clearance. If your vehicle is not suited for the road, I am happy to arrange a meeting spot where you can ride with me in my SUV to the location.

A day-use parking permit is required at Sparks Lake and can be purchased at the self-service kiosk near the lake. During the summer months, I also highly recommend bringing mosquito repellent, as the mosquitoes can be quite active, especially around sunset.

The drive, the mosquitoes, and the bumpy road are all quickly forgotten once you arrive. Sparks Lake is truly one of Central Oregon’s crown jewels, and the scenery is well worth the adventure.

Smith Rock -

Smith Rock provides a dramatic, iconic Central Oregon backdrop with towering cliffs, sweeping canyon views, and rugged terrain. It’s the perfect location for adventurous families, couples, and maternity sessions looking for bold, striking portraits in a truly one-of-a-kind setting.

Because of the direction the rock formations face, I only schedule sessions at Smith Rock in the evening when the light is at its best. The softer evening sun beautifully illuminates the landscape and creates the most flattering conditions for photography, making this an evening-only location.

During the warmer summer months, temperatures at Smith Rock can be significantly hotter than in Bend, so I recommend dressing accordingly and bringing water. As with any high-desert environment, wildlife is present throughout the park, including rattlesnakes, so it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and wear appropriate footwear. Boots, hiking shoes, or cowboy boots are all great options.

The park also has specific regulations regarding where visitors may access and photograph. Having worked here extensively, I carefully choose locations that not only showcase the incredible scenery but also prioritize safety, respect park regulations, and help us avoid sensitive wildlife areas.

Smith Rock is also one of Central Oregon’s most popular destinations, especially during the summer months, holidays, and peak tourist season. Parking can fill quickly, so I always recommend allowing extra travel time to find a parking space and purchase your day-use parking permit at the self-service kiosk located within the park. Arriving a little early helps ensure a relaxed start to your session and keeps us on schedule for the best evening light.

If you’re looking for a location that offers dramatic landscapes, iconic Central Oregon scenery, and a little bit of adventure, Smith Rock delivers some of the most memorable views and photographs in the region.

Three Sisters Mountains – Sisters, Oregon

The Three Sisters Mountains area offers vast open landscapes and sweeping mountain vistas. Families can enjoy wide, natural settings with endless possibilities for creative compositions.

This mountain location is one of my favorite spots in Central Oregon, but it is also one of the more adventurous options I offer. The area is remote, accessed by forest roads, and there are no restroom facilities available on site. There is also no cell service.

Because this location sits at a higher elevation, the weather can be very different from what you’re experiencing in town and can change quickly. Some evenings offer crystal-clear mountain views that are absolutely breathtaking, while other times clouds, smoke, fog, or incoming weather may completely hide the peaks.

Wind can also be much stronger here than in Bend, so it’s important to come with an open mind and a flexible attitude. In rare cases, weather, road conditions, or fire restrictions may make the location inaccessible or unsafe, and an alternate location may be needed.

The good news? No mosquitoes, very few critters, and I’ve never encountered snakes at this location, so that’s one less thing to worry about while enjoying the incredible scenery.

For those reasons, this location is always considered weather-dependent and access-dependent. I monitor conditions closely and will touch base prior to your session if there are any concerns. If needed, we’ll pivot to another beautiful location to ensure you still have an amazing experience.

If you’re someone who loves a little adventure and is willing to embrace whatever Mother Nature decides to give us that day, this location can be absolutely magical.

One additional note: because this location is accessed via forest roads and sits at higher elevation, I recommend arriving with a full tank of gas, bringing a light jacket even during the summer months, and allowing extra travel time. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, but when everything comes together, the views of the Three Sisters are simply unforgettable.

Black Butte Ranch -

Black Butte Ranch sits in the shadow of its namesake peak and offers a mix of wide-open meadows, lodgepole pines, manicured resort areas, and sweeping views of Black Butte and the Three Sisters. The setting works beautifully for family sessions, couples, maternity, and lifestyle shoots you get a relaxed, pastoral vibe alongside dramatic mountain silhouettes.

Because the light falls beautifully across the ranch in both directions, Black Butte Ranch is versatile, but I prefer either early morning for soft, cool tones and fewer people, or late afternoon/early evening for warm, golden light and long shadows that emphasize the landscape and shapes.

Access around the ranch is straightforward paved roads and well kept trails make it easy to reach most shoot locations in a standard car. That said, some quieter meadow or trail spots are a short walk from parking areas. A few parts of the ranch are private or reserved for guests, so I’ll always coordinate an appropriate meeting spot and make sure we use public or permitted areas.

Practical notes: bring layers (it can be breezy near the mountain), comfortable shoes for walking, and sunscreen. In summer evenings you may want insect repellent. Golf carts are common on the property if you’re staying at the ranch, they’re a fun way to get around but aren’t necessary for photos. Parking is generally available, but if you’re coming from out of town let me know and I’ll arrange a convenient meeting point.

Between the pastoral fields, lodgepole stands, and mountain backdrop, Black Butte Ranch offers a calm, picturesque setting that’s easy to access and consistently photogenic a great choice for timeless, natural images.

Shevlin Park -

Shevlin Park is a forested gem in Bend, filled with towering pine trees, open meadows, winding trails, and soft natural light filtering through the canopy. It’s ideal for families who love a woodland setting with peaceful paths, natural beauty, and a relaxed atmosphere.

One of the biggest advantages of Shevlin Park is its convenience. Located just minutes from downtown Bend, it’s easily accessible year-round and offers ample parking. This location works beautifully at virtually any time of day, making it one of the most flexible options I offer for scheduling.

Shevlin Park is especially well-suited for families with young children, dogs, and senior family members. The terrain is generally easy to navigate, with plenty of wide paths and accessible areas that allow us to create beautiful images without extensive walking or hiking.

What makes Shevlin Park so versatile is the variety of scenery available in one location. You’ll find dense forests, open meadow spaces, a seasonal creek, rustic bridges, and beautiful natural textures throughout the park. While it doesn’t offer mountain views, it more than makes up for it with its peaceful woodland charm and diverse backdrops.

Because of its accessibility, year-round beauty, and variety of scenery, Shevlin Park is often one of my top recommendations for families looking for a simple, stress-free location that still delivers gorgeous images. If you’re looking for an easy, convenient location with a little bit of everything Central Oregon has to offer, Shevlin Park is hard to beat.

High Desert / Badlands – Bend, Oregon

Located just east of Bend, the High Desert and Badlands offer a rugged, natural landscape filled with ancient juniper trees, lava rock formations, sagebrush, and sweeping desert views. This location is perfect for families looking for something a little different than the typical mountain or forest backdrop.

The open terrain creates a peaceful, adventurous atmosphere with plenty of space for kids to explore and play. The earthy tones and unique textures make this area feel distinctly Central Oregon while providing a timeless, natural setting for photographs.

A few things to keep in mind:

Evening sessions are recommended due to the lack of shade.
The terrain can be uneven, so comfortable walking shoes are helpful.
It can be windy at times.
During warmer months, it’s always wise to be mindful of rattlesnakes, although sightings are uncommon.

Deschutes River – Dillon Falls

It’s one of my favorite locations for families, couples, maternity sessions, and anyone looking for a classic Central Oregon river setting with a natural, relaxed feel.

One of the things I love most about Dillon Falls is the variety of scenery available within a relatively small area. Sawyer Park -

Sawyer Park offers a beautiful riverside setting along the Deschutes River, featuring towering junipers, pine trees, access to the water, large boulder formations, and easy terrain for families of all ages. With a mix of natural beauty and convenience, it’s a wonderful option for relaxed, versatile family sessions that combine both greenery and water in one location.

One of the biggest advantages of Sawyer Park is its proximity to Bend. Located just minutes from downtown, it’s an easy and convenient location for both locals and visitors who want beautiful outdoor scenery without a lengthy drive. Parking is generally easy, and the walking distances are minimal, making it a great choice for young children, grandparents, and multi-generational family sessions.

The variety of scenery packed into a relatively small area makes Sawyer Park especially appealing. We can utilize the river, rocky shoreline, forested pathways, open spaces, and natural textures to create a gallery with plenty of visual variety while staying close together throughout the session.

Lake Billy Chinook – Culver, Oregon

Located approximately 50 minutes north of Bend, Lake Billy Chinook offers a stunning high-desert landscape unlike anywhere else in Central Oregon. With dramatic canyon walls, rugged cliffs, sweeping lake views, and wide-open skies, this location creates a bold and adventurous backdrop for families, couples, maternity sessions, and seniors.

One of the things that makes this location so unique is the variety of scenery available in a relatively small area. The combination of water, towering rock formations, desert terrain, and expansive views creates photographs that feel both dramatic and distinctly Central Oregon.

This location is particularly beautiful in the evening when the softer light highlights the canyon walls and surrounding landscape. Sunsets here can be absolutely spectacular, with warm tones reflecting across the water and cliffs.

Because this is a high-desert environment, wind can occasionally be a factor, and temperatures are often warmer than in Bend during the summer months. Reynolds Pond -

Located just east of Bend, Reynolds Pond offers a quiet, natural setting surrounded by juniper trees, open space, and calm water.
