If you are searching for one of the most beautiful locations for maternity photography in Central Oregon, it is hard to imagine a more breathtaking setting than Black Butte Ranch near Sisters, Oregon. With sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains, peaceful meadows, towering ponderosa pines, and endless fields of golden summer grass, Black Butte Ranch provides the perfect backdrop for timeless maternity portraits that celebrate one of life’s most exciting seasons.

This beautiful summer maternity session took place on one of those classic Central Oregon evenings where everything simply came together. The Cascade Mountains still held just enough snow on their peaks to create incredible contrast against the deep blue summer sky. The meadows were filled with tall golden grasses gently moving in the evening breeze, creating movement and texture throughout the photographs while adding warmth to every image.

One of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions at Black Butte Ranch is because the scenery feels peaceful and untouched. No matter where you turn, there is another beautiful view waiting to become part of your story. It is one of my favorite locations for maternity photography near Sisters because it offers both expansive mountain landscapes and intimate natural settings all within the same session.

What made this particular maternity session even more special was the incredible variety we were able to create simply by following the changing evening light. I always schedule my outdoor maternity sessions as close to sunset as possible because the light tells its own story throughout the evening.

We began the session using soft backlighting while the sun was still above the mountains. The sunlight wrapped beautifully around my clients, creating a warm glow that highlighted every little detail of this season of anticipation. As golden hour arrived, the meadow shifted into rich, luminous tones, perfectly complementing the soft neutral wardrobe and the quiet beauty of the landscape.

Then the evening unfolded into something even more breathtaking.

As the sun slipped behind the Cascade Mountains near Sisters, Oregon, the entire scene softened into a dreamlike glow. Warm golden tones gave way to delicate pastel hues, and the remaining light turned into that beautiful side light I love for maternity portraits. It gently shaped my clients and created images that felt romantic, timeless, and full of quiet wonder. This short window after sunset is one of my favorite parts of the session because the light becomes so soft, flattering, and expressive.
