What Should I wear for Maternity Photos? Bend Oregon Maternity Photographer

What Should I Wear for Maternity Photos? | Bend, Oregon Maternity Photographer
One of the most common questions I get as a maternity photographer here in Bend, Oregon is:
“What should I wear?”
And the truth is — there isn’t just one right answer.
Whether you’re planning a full maternity session, a mommy-and-me maternity shoot like this beautiful session with a mama and her little girl at Smith Rock in Central Oregon, your wardrobe should reflect you.
There Is No One “Right” Maternity Look
Over the years photographing maternity and newborn sessions, I’ve seen so many beautiful approaches:
- Lace robes or kimonos with skin showing
- Barefoot denim and a simple tee
- Cozy sweaters that softly drape over the bump
- Fitted dresses that highlight every curve
- Flowing gowns in natural light
- Minimal, neutral two-piece sets
- Or even just jeans with an unbuttoned shirt
Your style can be modest, dramatic, sensual, relaxed, or somewhere in between.
The key is authenticity.
Don’t Be Afraid to Expose the Baby Bump
This is the part I gently encourage.
So often, women instinctively choose darker, form-fitting clothing because it feels slimming. And while that can absolutely be flattering, it can also conceal your bump more than you realize.
When the belly is covered in dark tones — especially in straight-on angles — sometimes you can’t even tell you’re pregnant unless you’re in full profile. That limits posing, movement, and variety.
When your baby bump is uncovered or exposed — even partially — everything changes.
When skin is visible:
- The bump is defined from every angle
- Movement feels more fluid
- Hands naturally frame your belly
- Light wraps beautifully around your shape
- Your pregnancy becomes the undeniable focal point
Whether that’s a bare belly with jeans, lace with skin peeking through, a cropped knit sweater, an open kimono, or a two-piece set — exposing the bump creates so much more dimension in your gallery.
It allows us to photograph you from the front, the side, in motion, sitting, standing — and your motherhood is unmistakable in every frame.
And there is something incredibly powerful about honoring your body this way.
Pregnancy is temporary. The strength, softness, and life your body is carrying deserves to be seen.
Think About Where These Images Will Live
As a Bend maternity photographer, I also encourage clients to think about where their photos will be displayed.
Your bedroom? Living room? Nursery?
Let your wardrobe complement your home’s aesthetic so your maternity photography feels cohesive and timeless — not trendy or disconnected from your space.
This mommy and me maternity session at Smith Rock was simple — just mama and her little girl.
No distractions. Just connection, anticipation, and the quiet beauty of growing their family here in Bend, Oregon.
As someone who photographs both maternity and newborn sessions, I see how quickly this season passes. Documenting it in a way that feels true to you — whether that means fully covered or beautifully exposed — is what matters most.
If you’re planning a maternity session in Bend, OR or the Central Oregon area and already thinking ahead to newborn photography, I'm happy to help you style something that feels natural, powerful, and completely aligned with who you are. I also have a full newborn and momma client closet that you are welcome to take a peak at and utilize if something speaks to you.
